I recently came across a 2-3" alligator snapper. I have him in a 75 right now. I really want to put him in with some of my larger fish. I have a 150 that I am using to grow out some p bass, gars and a tsn. Would he be compatible if the smallest fish is around 6". I would hate to introduce him only to have him eat my fish. I have a 5000 gallon pond in the basement but I'm afraid he would be a snack for my big rtc and or my larger p bass. Any suggestions would help. I had turtles when I was younger but never really got into them. Thanks

Alligator Snappers need shallow water to thrive in. It should be deep enough for them to comfortably lay on the bottom but still be able to reach the surface to breath without swimming up. And these guys can take down pretty large fish it they want to. For the most part mixing turtles and fish never ends well.......for the fish that is.

no they used to be endangered, I acctually got him from a turtle and tortise rescue. There are a number of farms in the southern us that you can buy hatchlings directly from too.

Doesnt matter how big the fish is and how small the turtle is, it will ALWAYS try to get it. I thought like this in highschool when I had my common snapper. His shell was maybe 6" long and I put in a BIG fish I had that was no shorter than 10". At first the turtle was like OMG get it away from me. About 1hr later I checked on them and found out the turtle took a chunk out of the fish's belly.

So just because the turtle cant eat the whole thing, doesnt mean he doesnt want a taste of whats swimming around.

no w8! ! ! i know a place where they are illegal!!! here in good ol' CALI -.-" and yes im angry!

ok, first off you should know that turtle will out live you. you can also expect it to get around 100-150 lbs. on you tube there is a video of an ally latched on to a carp that there was no way he could eat. the carp was about 20 times the turtles size. if you go by the general rule of thumb you will need 10 gallons of water for every inch of shell length. they also as adults are very cappable of removing a limb. check out this site for much more info than i can post here.
