Some rocks I put in my tank seem to be buffering the P/H, so I`ve bought some almond leaves to counter this. What I`d like to know is do I have to treat/boil/soak them before adding them to my tank, or can I just throw them straight in?

Cheers Outlander.

i just rinse them off and throw them in. but you may be doing more harm than good by having all these things in your tank that mess with your ph

Yeah I know but I love planted and 'scaped' aquariums. Thanks for the reply matey :)

Just talk to ur LFS before you buy rocks. There are alot that mess with PH. I know my LFS actually has two seperate sections of rocks to avoid this.

If your not sure wether a rock will buffer your ph just put it in a bucket of water. Check the ph before you add the rock and after its been in there a few days. You might have a local river to get rocks from as well just quarantine the rocks to ensure nothing harmfull is introduced into your tank.

i also read about putting a few drops of the solution for a nitrate (or nitrite) test kit on it. if it fizzes, it will mess with your ph. never tried this so i dont know for sure that it will work

Ok thanks for the advice everyone. I`m going to do away with rocks, and go for a big chunk of drift wood instead. I spotted a nice piece in the lfs, so I`m going to get it this afternoon (thats if it hasn`t been sold yet of course!).

Cheers Outlander. :)
