Hi,

I was looking thru some threads and I saw that some people use almond leaves to condition their water.

Does it work like peat moss? How much do you use? Can you use untreated almond branches as decorations, and perhaps still get some benefit?

I presume you put the almond leaves in a filter bag.

I live on an old almond orchard, so this might work out great for me.

Thanks,
Stefan

eoibo, I smell you...

They soften the water and darken it somewhat, otherwise They really just decay...

Like Kepa leaves, the leaves should tan and neautralize the Ph to about 6.0(thats if like Kepa, whick I think so).....Bunch a handful of leaves into a mesh bag and soak in the filter for about a week, then take out....

That is subjective. It takes a lot of leaves to make a significant difference in your pH assuming your KH is high. I just harvest the dead leaves and put a few straight into my river tanks assuming of course, my sources are free from pesticides. I do this more for the sake of the fish than the water chemistry itself as my KH is rather high.

I have well water, and it's pretty hard. So maybe I shouldn't bother...

Atison's Betta Spa is an Almond Extract/Water Softener, check that out. Great for Bettas.

Isn't it Indian almond leaf, specifically? At least, that's what betta keepers use. Is a backyard almond tree in the US similar enough?

I know Drs. Foster & Smith carries a liquid extract, if you don't want to fuss with the leaves.
