Was holding some siquia in a 10 gallon tub with a 300w heater (only heater I had) last week before taking them to Florida to deliver to a friend. Didn't take the heater out of the tub. Was going to do it today because there was still like 5 gallons of water in the tub last I saw it, but my parents wake me up and call me downstairs to tell me the heater burned through the tub and onto the carpet, and was starting to make small flames. My parents had already dealt with it by the time I got down... My guess is part of the heater got exposed, it started heating up to match the ambient temp like all heaters do, and in doing that boiled off the rest of the water.

There is now a hole in the big patch of carpet we use as a rug for the basement door caked in plastic, a burnt patch in the actual carpet, a shattered plastic tub with a matching hole in it outside, and a heater that is also caked in plastic.

I know it should be the least of my concerns right now, but all that said... Am I still able to use the heater?

i would buy another one just to be safe, heaters are semi disposable IMO
I was thinking about this on the ride home... (What used to be a brand new) 300 watt heater I got for free vs the cost of a house OR at least a basement worth of flooring and 90% of my fish

I'd like to add that food safe plastics are no longer food safe when melting. Chemicals were released into the water. I wouldn't keep anything that was exposed, much less what is likely a damaged heater.
