I tried adding a new piece of driftwood to my 55 yesterday, and I must not of soaked it long enough, because it still wont sink yet. So I take out the piece, do a 20% water change and go out. I wake up the next morning to my fish floating at the top of the tank gasping for air. Check my levels , everything looks fine. (I do have the strips though) which are not always accurate. I go to work, and on the way home I buy a airstone. I do already have a fluvial 405 filter going. I come home and my istlanum is on his side barely alive, and the convicts or still struggling at the top. I throw the airstone in, and do another small water change. So far the convicts are swimming around a little more now, and the istlanum is atleast upright in his cave. I will keep everybody updated on the progress.

Very strange. Maybe toxins in the driftwood? Hope they pull thru.

Cleaned out my filter, changed some carbon, and keeping my airstone in for the next day or two, just in case. Fish are fine, and active now. But it was def a scare. Im going to try the driftwood again later this week, after it soaks a little longer. Ill keep you guys updated.

I had a scare like this several years ago after a water change. My fish were gasping and lying on the substrate. I found out a little later that the water company was adjusting the amount of chlorine in their plant and that a warning had been announced on local tv. But I was doing a water change during that time and missed the announcement. I managed to save most of my fish with another deep water change. I only lost one fish, a juvenile Argentea. Painful loss but a lesson learned. I hope your fish continue to do well.

I am going to boil some water when i get home and change out the water i have it soaking in now. I heard that speeds up the process
