Was in a LFs today looking at the new stock and saw two cool little new cats, each about an inch or maybe a little bigger. One was an Asian RTC which I already knew was a bad idea from reading about them on hear. The second was just a neat looking little cat and I thought about it for a minute, and then looked it up. The Rita cat reaches up to 59 inches. Would have been a bad idea as I don't have the room.

Moral of the story, always research before buying. Just afraid that lots of people will buy these cute little cats because they were cheap.

One doesn't exclude the other. We are all in this together... whether we like it or not... me thinks.

hmmm, would love to get a rita myself one day. SOmeone on here use to have one. Awesome fish. Good job on doing your research though. :)

When it started eating all it's tankmates and drooling at the dog I would have gotten worried. They only wanted $10 for it too.

lol, I have the reverse of your problem here in Montana. There's no lfs in this town, a small pet store with like 10 guppy tanks lol. They can't even order in a rtc for less than 40. For something like a rita I would have to wait till one was online then I would probably have to pay 40+ and then another 60 for shipping. :) Guess that makes me more selective of what species I get though. Not very easy just to go to the lfs and pick out something I want cause they have nothing I want lol. i was looking to buy a rita for a long time especially when the 4000 gal was nearly completed. Now i have only just the 100 gal, a 30 gal, and a 400 gal pond that is nearly completed. :)

There are two giants in the Rita genus growing to 1.5 and 2 meters. Others are ~10". http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/genus.php?genus_id=136 AFAIK, which is not far, the ID is challenging even with more mature specimen and is very hard with babies and juvies. The distinctions are subtle between the unremarkably-looking species.
