Decided to do a large water change today as my water was looking a bit brown to tannins. Did approximately a 50% water change and I did not match the temp well, about 1/2 way through refilling all my honduran red points and a few swordtails were laying on their side on the bottom flailing around. It also could have been due to not enough prime in there tank either. Dumped some more prime in, threw a bag of carbon in the filter just in case something happened and turned the lights off. I got lucky, came back two hours later and all were swimming well again. It was not something I want to endure again I am going back to 3-4x a week small water changes.

Never guess at the temp when you do a WC, just get yourself a floating glass thermometer so you can take it from your tank (after checking the temp) and matching the tap water easily before adding it back in.

Honestly you don't need carbon in your filter at all unless you recently went through a round of meds with your fish, IMO it's a waste of money.

Good to see that all of the fish pulled through the ordeal.....I have always used carbon in my filters but more and more I read that it is not needed.I do have a feeder tank that up until recently had a hang on power filter with carbon cartridges inside of it.Well it died on me and I now run a pond filter in the tank and the water is just not as clear as it was with the carbon filter....

I don't use carbon in my eheim at all, and my water is crystal clear :goldfish:

Come to think of it,I rarely change the carbon that I do have in my filters.I just rinse off the media.I may try going carbon less in one of my smaller tanks and compare the clarity.

Hey guys, the carbon was put in with enough time for the prime to dechlorinate. I put the carbon in because one of the aquaclear filter tops fell in and I was afraid it may have had some type of spray on it from when my fiancee febreezes stuff even though she's not supposed to be near the tank. I normally do not run any carbon. Everyone seems to be doing well I'm fairly sure I hit them with something similar to acclimation shock from water that was to cold.
