Hello all,

Long time lurker, new member.

I have access to marine grade 3/4 inch plywood that has been epoxied for use in yacht furniture. Has anyone used a product like this to make a plywood tank? Would I have to epoxy more or just silicone all seams? The epoxy is between paper and credit card thickness.

I did a test by cutting a piece and siliconing it to a single side on a 29 gal( one side was cracked , 1 dollar garage sale find.) It has held water for a week with no sign of leaching in the wood.

I am super cheap(frugal) and want a bigger tank . My africans would look cool in a 200 gallon.

Thank you for reading/advice,

Max

Ok now an expliation of those pics.

I am going to 'try' and use the glass from the leaky octogon- why are 6 sides called octogons, never figured that out. Anyway, I have an enclosed porch that I only use as my art studio and I have a set of office windows that look out on it. I want to build tanks that will cover the bottom set of windows so I will be looking 'out' into fish tank.

My wife is calling dinnertime. I will explain more later.

Thanks for reading.

Ok , I have to build 2 seperate tanks so I can still have access to the back door. I wondered if I could drill out for a four inch pvc pipe that I could seal and have run between them.

I have access to enough of the finished ply to make my 2 tanks. I think I am going to use Sweetwater sealant over the existing epoxy just to be on the safe side. Apopka is an hour from here so I can just drive and pick it up at Aquatic Ecosystems.

I would like to be able to use no or a minimal amount of bracing. I read over the GARF blueprints and my tanks are way smaller and not much bigger . It appears they use no external bracing and just coat the inside with an epoxy membrane.

Thoughts?

Flame away, I have owned many large and small glass or acrylic tanks , but never tried this wood thing.

Who calls it an octagon?
I've only heard those called hexagon or "hex" tanks

Lol, thanks guys. I think I just watched the Chuck Norris movie last week and octogon was stuck in my head.

The plywood came from Sea Ray- they build boats. I think they were the end of a color stain that they discontinued. I believe they used it to make furniture-cabinets etc inside the boats.

Ive cut the pieces for the small tank and have the other wood at a friends who has a saw big enough to do the cuts for the larger tank.

Pics are of the cut wood and the 'trial' 29 I made to see if it held water. I decided even though it does i want tobe sure and overcoat it with the Sweetwater.

The finish is just so nice I thought it would look super cool in the tank- both sides are finished and epoxied.

Thanks,
Max

I'm 30 minutes from Aquatic Eco-Systems. Six minutes west of Fishy Business, and 22 minutes east of The Aquarium. :D

And isn't the Sea Ray factory still on Merritt Island? I use to live just north of the factory on Hall Rd.
