I've had this ray for 8 months. He has eaten since day two and is still eating like a maniac, but yesterday I noticed the tip of his tail is now white. I looked at it again today and am now worried. It looks a tony bit fluffy. I just dosed the water with a small amount of aquarium salt. What else should I do and should I be worried? I don't know how it could have been injured. Pics!

Water parameters are 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, 10 ppm nitrates. Ph its 6.7. Ray is very active, as always, but now occasionally does some rapid, erratic swimming (not sure that's a symptom or him just thinking there is food in the tank). Please share your knowledge and experiences that may help.

most if not all of my old rays had it. i think it comes from swimming up the side of the tank and coming straight back down..
i always wondered why they never broke their tails..

Dude venom, he goes up and down all the time, that must be it. Thank you. I guess my sand might be a bit sharp on the tail tip as it jabs into the sand over and over. Reason to go bare bottom?

Exactly :) I wouldn't worry about the substrate that would happen no matter what he falls onto IMO

i agree but disagree.
look, put yourself in the rays shoes...would you want to have pink sand?
hell no..and neither does your ray.
all the other rays on the forum are laughing and pointing fingers at him.
i am sure your ray hates you by now.

Just rubbed sore, my hens tail tip is almost nubbed off because she spends so much time at the surface making waves and her tail is rubbing the bottom. Wouldn't worry at all but like any wound keep an eye for infection

Now that is funny

You have nothing to worry about his tail except he will probably lose the tip

he goes up and down all the time,

also..this is a sign of a very healthy ray...
and honestly about going bare bottom. some people like it some dont.
myself i do like a bb for two reasons...
1. i like to be able to have my friends look under the tank while they eat. for some reason people really like to watch it as do i..
2. i like the way they move on a bb tank. they use more of their disc to move..meaning more waves in the disc. on sand they use more of the back fins.
but thats IMHO.

a healthy normal ray shouldnt want to bury itself anyway..only if it gets spooked or something like that...
again..thats IMHO.
