I can never get my emperors to start up easily. It always takes me about twenty minutes of tinkering before they start up. I like these filters, but this gets frustrating.

I own a Penguin, which seems to have a similar design to the Emperor regarding the intake tube, and it always takes a while to start...

Have you tried pouring a cup or two of water into the filter chamber before you plug it in? With that trick, mine all start right away, every time.

Hmmm i dont even prime them and mine take 10 seconds max to get going.

Make sure the intake tube is well seated in the impeller housing. Then slowly pour water over it where they meet.

Additionally, fill the tank to the top if it isn't already.

The lower the water level in the tank=The harder it is to prime. Also cleaning the impeller housing and uplift tubes will help. If you have the emp 400 Clean the spray bars.

As previously stated by some one else on here. The tank water level has alot to do with how good a hob filter works as far as starting up. The higher the water level the better they work. I have one of these that is like 6 years old and the impeller gets stuck all the time when i shut it off. And i just stick a chop stick in it and push it and it starts. Allso if mine doesnt fill up properly like it should. I just dump water in it to fill it up with a cup and it starts emedietly like that. Your impeller might have a problem with it. And you can buy replacement parts for them on www.drfosterandsmith.com and a bunch of other places on the net just google filter replacement parts. Allso i have noticed that these brand and other brand hob filters get screwed up and dont work properly if you use sand as a substrate. Because they get clocked up i do not know what your set up is like. But if you have sand that might allso be the problem. Hope this helped and good luck.

It is the HOB. Tanks are full to the top and I fill the things completely before trying to start them. I have to fill that intake tube with water and mess with it fora while before the suction starts on them. Happens every time I shut them off.
