I saw a vid on alternatives to monster fish so I thought I’d post some cool alternatives I like. Anyone else know of any cool alternatives? Criteria would be for tanks under 100
PB bass- Yellow perch
Snakehead-pike cichlid
Datnoid-African Leaf Fish
Giraffe catfish-dwarf giraffe catfish
Red tail cat- Rafael catfish
Clown knife- African brown knife
Vulture Catfish- Pictus catfish
Piranha- exodon or columbian tetra or silver dollar

MBU Puffer - Schoutedeni puffer
Gars - Halfbeaks

Or for alternative saltwater monster fish you can get a columbian shark catfish and acclimate it to saltwater instead of getting a real shark.

That would be cool, I did a saltwater pond a long time ago with a bottom type shark ( can’t remember the type). But a columbian catfish would definitely look like an open water shark.

i have a idea for a 300 gallon tub pond with a jardini, a lima shovelnose, black ghost knife, silver dollars, and a kelberi peacock bass, instead of finding similar species im just finding smaller sub species, sadly the rtc doesnt have any smaller “cousins”

Because I have hard, high pH water, I like to consider alternate species that work in my own conditions.
Because all pike cichlids tend to come from the softer , low pH waters of S America, a reasonable alternative to pikes that come from hard waters of Panama (pH 8 and above), I have collected these convergient evolutionary gobies, Gobiomorus dormitor.

And an alternative to the soft water huejata gars of Colombia, below is Ctenolucius beanii , a gar Characin found in the mineral rich waters of Central America.

So far, the ones I´ve caught, have maxed out at between 10-12¨, a much more size manageable species for aquariums, an alternative to true gars.

These Gobiomorus do get quite large though, hitting at least 24¨.

The one above started consuming 4¨tetras, moved on to medium plecos, and them wiped out a number of 8¨cichlids.
