i'm looking to soften my water. if i don't want to use peat, can i use a blackwater-type liquid conditioner and get the same effect? also, when you use a blackwater liquid conditioner, does it change the coloration of your water any?

Hence the name ;)

There are also pH-lowering conditioners, basically acid. You could try those if you dare ... I've never used them, and I am not so sure about pouring acid in my tank, even if it's for aquarium use...

Depending on your hardness and tank size, you could also use CO2. But your water should be quite soft, otherwise, it gets expensive real fast (let alone the original set-up costs)

I've had good luck with waters of the world conditioner the only thing is add slowly at first over a few days to adjust the ph and then set aside a pre-measured cup to use with the regualar water change try to do the same amount each water/conditioner and you wont have a problem also to save a buck i use the one with a lower ph vaule then i neeeded and half dosed goes further that way..

Amquel water conditioner (not amquel plus). that bad boy lowers my pH like crazy. My tap is at 7.6 but add some amquel that thing will drop to 6.0-6.5. depending on dosage I guess. you would have to play around with it.

ive used peat and kents black water extract with success i stopped using both but in my spotted turtle tank i still use the black water extract

i think seachem makes this sponge ive used it before it works real well and it can be recharged too
