altifrons in a bare bottom tank?

How do geo's do in a bare bottom tank?

I have grown out a pair of altifrons, and it was time for them to go in with my rays. But the only tank i have available is a bare bottom with rays. Will the usually do ok without sand?

Geos really need the sand they will be much happier they are called earth eaters because of their ha bits of sifting sand and small gravel. Will they be OK? Sure, but substrate is prefered
