hawaii
hi i was wondering if a ro unit and indian almond leaves are mandatory for these guys. Also how long can six altums stay in a 55 if they're the size on a nickel right now and if a eheim 2217 is enough. I live in hawaii so the water is fairly alkaline like 7.7 or 7.6. I do water changes every monday and thurs. Yes the tank will be heavily planted.

srry for all these questions i just don't want these guys to die after spending $50 each for them

Match the water conditions they were previously in with your own. This is easier than trying through all the trouble to acclimate them as they won't acclimate well especially when they are wild caught. Considering their tall structure, I'd keep them in a tank no less than 24 inches in height.

after some trial and error i am finally able to keep P. Altums and not kill them. They come naturally predisposed to a disease that eats their fins and causes a nasty fungus just before it kills them.

one person successfully warded off this disease with methylene blue, i've seen on other forums someone has used a medication called Foran-2.

once i figured out what was happening i added salt to their tank and i brought the temp up to 86 degrees F (this is the first thing i try when any of my fish are sick). and when i saw nothing change in 2 days and had 2 more dead angelfish, i did a BIG water change, 75%, and replaced the salt, then added pimafix for 7 days, just like the bottle says, and did two 25% water changes 2 days apart and then treated with pimafix again.

i have 3 altums left, one with virtually untouched fins, one with just the tips gone, and one that i just barely brought back from the brink, has almost no fins and was starting to get the fungus stuff when the pimafix started to work for him. His fins are starting to grow back, and he's doubled in size now. the one with no fins is actually the dominant fish in the tank.

when i get more altums i will NOT put them in this tank to start with, i will put them in a smaller tank and treat them with either pimafix or Furan-2 before they are introduced to this tank with my now healthy altums.

Morledzep, wish I would've know sooner about this info. I lost the last 7 altums and have only one suvivor.

yep, me too.. i asked everyone and every forum i could and never got any info other than i'm terrible because i keep crushed coral in my substrate.. lol.

i had to find out the hard way, and AFTER i found that pimafix works, i found what i was asking for on a totally unrelated forum in their "general aquaria" section and found out about the other medications that apparently are more effective than Pimafix is.

the guy that used to methylene blue does it as a matter of course with ALL new fish he buys, he quarantines them in a small tank and treats them before he puts them in his regular tanks.. he didn't know there was a problem with these angelfish either.

First off... to answer your questions.... 55g tank is more than sufficient for a pack of 6 altums nickel size. I got my altums at dime size 3 months ago, and now they're alittle bigger than quarter size in a 60g tank. Believe it or not... your alkaline water is fine, as long as you can successfully acclimate the altums to this water. I would recommend cutting down on the water changes though.... here's some more advice.....

Quarantine is a must. I quarantined my fish for 2 weeks and used Prazipro (anti-parasitic med). Before quarantine...acclimate them slowly, and other than feeding... try not to bug them for a couple of weeks. Whatever water you have now... is good. Don't mess with adjusting pH. Just make sure the water is well aged and fully cycled. I used water that has been in an established tank ( pH 8.0, super hard nasty so-cal water, and 0 nitrates 0 ammonia). Get them feeding well. Hikari frozen blood worms worked really well for me. One cube really fattened their tummies. I fed them 4 times/day, with 1 cube each session. The key here is minimize stress and keep them well fed.

Again.... DON'T TOUCH THE WATER!!!!

After a couple of weeks, once all is good, then you can consider 25% water change once/week. They're not really all that high maintenance... but if you fuss too much, then they'll stress and die....

This worked for me... and I'm proud to say that my original pack of altums purchased 3 or so months ago are still doing well and are so HOT!!!

Once you get these altums settled in, then you will be rewarded. May the force be with you young jedi knight....

so now i have to acclimate them slowly and not do a water change for a couple weeks until they're adjusted? Also would metronidazole tablets work on altums instead of prazipro, and would you suggest to use pimafix or methylene blue or foran- 2 to treat this fungus thing MORLEDZEP was talking about. Also would a lot of plant cover help the angels to adjust quicker.

after they are in their permanent tank they love live plants.. in the quarantine tank i wouldn't have anything more than a substrate and a foam filter run off an air pump..

From the details Morledzep provided, this is not true fungal infection but bacterial infection which unfortunately for most of us, we fail to realize that it is in fact contagious and fatal to fish.

I only used Prazipro and I was successful. I didn't try the other meds you mentioned, so I can't comment on those. You can get a very small bottle of Prazipro for $4.

Here's a video of my quarantine tank:
