How many of these fish should I start off with to end up with a pair? I'm thinking of ordering 6 small altum angelfish in the upcoming week for a 55 gallon grow out with some Cory cats and a few potted plants. I just finished cycling the tank and only plan on using it until the fish gain some size and I can move them to a larger tank my only question is out of the 6 fish should I end up with a pair/also what size tank is recommended for a breeding pair of these angles being a larger growing species would the 55 I plan to grow them out in work?

I would get 12 if you could afford it. Of course you'll need a bigger tank long-term. Where you getting the from? You'll to make sure they are true altums.

I agree that you want a lot especially if they are wilds given the high mortality rates of newly imported wild Altums. Be sure you are prepared with the proper water parameters and you have meds stocked up and ready.

Good luck.

True altum? I got 20 that I raise them since they were dime size and all are currently 2 years with me. I got 2 pairs but getting them to spawn is another thing and raise the fry will be very challenge.

I've had a pair of wild type scalare angels in the past but I've read Altums are nothing like the more common angelfish and are more like discus. I've held off on getting them purely because I was unsure about getting these and killing them do to some sort of poor husbandry on my part and I really didn't want that to happen I have also moved a few of my discus into the tank I had planned for them since then and now w they seem more like a future idea then something I'm actually getting in the near future. I'm just wondering in your experience how hard they are to keep healthy and happy and how many would be a nice number to start out with for a beginner would 12 really be what I'd want that seems like a lot of fish to deal with once they gain some size and i have to cut back on the number of fish in my tank.
