I'm one of the lucky ones.... I purchased a group of 7 dime sized altums 3-4 months ago, and they're still kicking and doing well. They're alittle larger than quarter size now. :)

They're no longer skittish and eating Tetra flake foods aggressively. I think its time for me to give them some tankmates. I've recently added a group of corydora sterbai (10 pieces).

Does anyone else out there keep altums with other tankmates? I know these guys will grow large (hopefully), so I need tankmates that will grow with them. {Possilby other domesticated angels? other wilds? other south american fish?

If possible, post pictures of your Altum community tanks!!!!

They can be mixed with scalares, discus, apistos and rams. If you want tetras, get large deep bodied ones such as bleeding hearts. Plecos and cories are fine. Bear in mind their jaw structure is different from scalares so it's not surprising they may attempt to eat fish that look like they won't fit their mouths.

I was thinking of mixing in a group of Congo Tetras and Emperor Tetras. Would those work?
Would they fair well with domesticated angel strains, ie kois, platinums, and veiltails?

I'd be careful with emperors. They're a lot smaller and may still be eaten. Congos are fine. Scalares can work. Just watch them closely because most scalares are not exactly angelic.;)

With my five 3" (without fins) angels I have a couple of gourami, 2 severum, 2 bristle nose pleco, 2 3" oscars and a 12" endi bichir (oscars and bichir waiting for their new tank).

Clown loaches and bichirs make good tankmates. I have some for sale.:naughty:

3-4 months and only growing to qtr size is a pretty slow growth rate. I think domestic angels seem to grow faster. At least you still have your altums. I hate you!!!!:banhim::ROFL:

I agree. When I kept domestic angels, I was changing the water every other day, and they grew fast!!!
I wanted to take things slower with the altums... and changed water only every other week. I wanted to keep stress levels low, so they don't get freaked out with frequent water changes. So they grew slow...

Recently I started changing the water every 2 days. There has been a very noticeable change in over size and appetite. So that's the key I tell everyone. Keep the stress low by performing less frequent water changes at first. Once the Altums are acclimated and seem "happy" then you can start doing more frequent water changes.
