Always been a salty but man lately I have been getting the urge to set up a nice planted tank. Pit the nicest reef against the nicest planted and man it is pretty much a stalemate!
I always tell people that planted tanks are just freshwater reefs. When you get started in the planted world though, there are new problems that you have no experience with in the saltwater world. For example algae usually doesnt grow on a healthy coral...algae WILL grow on plants and its just a terrible mess. Cleaner crews arent as good in planted tanks...there are just a lot of problems. Mainly algae. There are also ways to deal with it that you come to learn just like reefing problems.
I love my planted tank, and I love my reef(s)...I told a buddy last night I could never pick one or the other.
a densley planted freshwater planted is gorgeous. i personally prefer it over a reef tank. something about the color of plants really does it for me. reefs are beautiful, but theyre almost too colorful for my tastes lol!
here's my old 55g:
