My Penguin 200 filter on my 20 long ran dry somehow. The impeller stopped turning and the wet/dry bio-wheel dried out totally before i noticed. The tank started looking cloudy and my pleco were acting a bit odd. Fortunately I had an AquaClear 30 and some ceramic media from another tank to fill the filter up with. Things would have been a lot better if I had two filters running.

LOL, im noob but its common sense to have 2 filter equal or one is lesser running the same time as an insurance, but if you have black out for hours u still done for LOL

yup, having two filter can only protect that much, If you have a blackout = GG. Get those small generators.

I only have 1 FX5 in my tank. If it fails, ill put all the bio media directly into the tank and purchase another one.

I have three systems running. i have two of the penguin bio wheel filters going and a canister running and i still manage to get cloudy water. some people are just lucky with crystal clear water i guess.lol

I have 4 filters on one tank, two of them are canisters, and the water still isn't perfect...:nilly: Then again oscars are messy fish. :grinno:

I'll do no more than 3, its overkill. But on all my tanks I have at least 2, except on my 20l fry tank.

Besides the obvious benefit of course of just having two for more filtration I like to have two so I can totally clean one out spotless without having to worry about wiping out my bio-filter since I can leave the other running. Alot of times one just isn't enough with hungry fish.
