always present?

One of my dither tetras began exhibiting the classic stringy poo pretty much out of the blue. I am wondering if hexamita is always present in our tanks and got her due to old age. I made her transition to the afterlife as quick and painless as possible and she did get four good years. Thoughts?
 
I wouldn't say in every tank but many fish are affected with hex and show no outward symptoms. It's only when fish are stressed(there is some evidence that diet plays a factor)that the disease progresses....
