So one thing I've learned is to never dose a tank when it's just starting out. I set up my SW biocube in August and immediately started dosing it with Purple Up in order to help speed up the growth of corraline off my live rock. Once my tank cycled and I was able to get some coral in there, I then started dosing Magnesium, Seachem Reef Plus, two more additives, and then spot feeding corals. Almost a week into it, I noticed there were some different types of algae growing. Once I saw this, it was too late. Hair algae started growing everywhere and took over my zoas. Fast forward to today, where I don't spot feed, do a water change once a month and have completely stopped dosing everything. Now, my corraline algae has EXPLODED, while I'm still getting a ton of green and red slime algae.

Moral of the story, let your tanks get settled before you get over zealous on things.
