I just purchased a 75 gallon tank. It has the same dimensioof my 55 gallon except that that its width (depth) extends another three inches. I want to put it on the satnd I currently use for my 55 gallon tank which means it will be supported in its length but would extend two inches beyond the back of the stand. I don't woory about the look because it is in a corner against the wall. I am just worried about the weight. Should I be? The cabit is a very solid piece, with no particle board, all solid wood.

no bad move it will put stress on the glass an will probly cause it to leak. but thats just my two cents i wouldnt doit but there are others on here who may say dif im still new to this

I would imagine it would cause alot of stress and might crack the bottom of the tank.

a 55 is 12" wide.
a 75 is 18" wide. so the total overhang will be 3" on each side.

this is not good. the tank bottom is at risk for breakage unless you place a sheet of plywood over top of the original stand.

what this does is transfer the full weight of the tank evenly to the plywood.

with out it, the full weight of the tank is pressing down on the stand that only covers the middle portion of the tank.

this places great stress on the bottom glass at the edges of the overhang.

its like taking a pencil and putting on the edge of a desk and pressing down to break it.

pressing down on pencil breaks it at the point that it overhangs the desk.

same idea here.

go for the plywood, or better yet, get a new stand.

good luck and enjoy your new tank.

also agree . . . as a smaller example, I put a 30G tank (36" wide) on a 29G stand (30" wide) . . . obviously the weight is not an issue, since they are roughly the same volume, but I had the same 3" overhang

I put a 1" thick piece of heavy-duty particle board over the stand (secured with screws) and then the 30G tank on top of that . . . looks good, no worries

I wouldn't do this without reframing the top of the stand. This can be done any number of ways.

Personally I would use more than just plywood under the tank in this application. I wouldn't even expect 3/4" plywood to offer much support when overhanging a base by 3".

Not only is the ply going to overhang 3" front and back, ther eis no downward pressure on the middle of the ply allowing it to not only flex at the ends, but to bow up in the middle.

You have a lot of options, the right one for you depends on how much effort you want to put into and how pretty of a final result you are looking to get out of it...

I did have a 75 gal tank crack once due not being properly supported. It split from the top right to the bottom left and was louder than a shot gun. Fortunately it was in a garage fishroom so no damage besides the loss of the tank was done. It's not something anyone would want to see happen in the house...

Build a simple frame from 2x4's to go on top, with cross braces front to back, and then put a 3/4" ply on top of that.
