I bought this fish tank from my LFS, and I always go in there for fish meds, etc. I got the tank to use as a quarantine tank and it was a 12 gallon clear seal tank and it cose me £35. It came without a hood, just the glass tank. After adding pump, heater etc I've realised I really am going to need a hood to prevent evaporation etc and I'm putting my gold nugget in there - just to fatten him up a bit, he hasnt been eating that well since I got him. But when I ring her to ask her how much the hood will cost, she tells me it will be £28.50 - thats nearly the same price as the tank! And it does not come with any lights etc. Just a plastic hood. Sounds a bit weird....like i'm paying way too much for it. But then again I really need it. What do you guys think?

I was told I'd have to buy a whole new lightstrip for $30 when my ballast went out, I ended up going to home depot and spending $5 on a new ballast. I'd check around for a diy hood/light if you can't find one cheaper in your area considering it's ust a quarantine.

whats a diy hood? one i have to make myself?i cant do stuff like that...but i cant keep onspending money like this just for the hood - i mean why does it have to be so expensive i saw one online for £15 - half that price. but im worried if i get it may not fit, coz its not the same make

where do i get those materials from: plexiglass?

a DIY hood is really pretty easy. for lighting you could go to walmart and get a fixture with a bulb in it for $7ish. i got an 18" under cabinet fluoro fixture with bulb in it for that price. i made a very very simple DIY hood, and ive never built anything in my life. i put the under cabinet fixture in there just like you would do it under a cabinet.. using 2 nails then just hang it.
its not as hard as you think, trust.. and its pretty cheap to make a DIY hood
you could go really really easy and just buy some small, thin pieces of wood, saw them to your tank measurements, nail them together, then lay some glass or acrylic or plexi on top of it.
browse around home depot, they have a bunch of stuff.

if its just a quarantine tank, i wouldnt worry about it being pretty. just go to a local hardware/home improvement store and im sure youd find something that will work for a lot less money
