No offense to the clown loach owners, but what's the big deal? Seems like lots of people love them. I don't wanna miss the train due to ignorance. I also read its good to keep them in schools??? And what's shoal?

One of the intriguing things about the Clown Loach is its long life span compared to many other aquarium fish - - -at least 15 years with claims of them living "for decades". Also, their impressive colorful appearance and size (up to 14"). And when they school, it is visually striking. Do I keep them? No, but they are a fish that I wouldn't mind trying. Here's a pic that I took 2 years ago at the Aquarium Society of Winnipeg's Expo.

cls are great to add some movement to the tank and they also clean up okay

Oh that's perfect. I need something to clean up after my messy aro.

So I have to keep them in a school? What's the minimum amount?

I always say a good number of CLs is how many you afford/find/fit in your tank. The more the merrier but no less that 6 or so

The most interesting thing about clown loaches is how they interact with each other when they are in a group (at least 5). They like to chase each other around and then lay around on top of each other when they feel like resting. Very unusual interaction when compared to other fish.
Also, as stated above, they can grow to a good size (12-14") with thick bodies... but this takes years.
They also have sharp spikes that swing out from just under their eyes when they need to defend themselves... this is pretty amazing to see.
