I want a sand dwelling/ nest building tanganyikan for my 55. I have had an extremely bad experience ordering online and would like to stay away from that.
The LFS can't get xenotilapia or callochromis, or enantiopus.
I can't to cyathopharynx in this size tank, and I'm not interested in opthalmotilapia.

What else could I do in a 55 that is colorful, decent sized, (5-6 inches) and builds sand nests?

If your lfs can't get any of those, they probably won't be able to get any other obscure tanganyikans. Most of the time all you'll find is rock dwellers like brichardi, leleupi, maybe some altolamprologus. You will probably have to bite the ordering bullet to get what you're looking for, unless you can make the drive to somewhere in your area that sells a greater variety of tanganyikans

If they can't get those they won't be able to get anything else from wherever it is they order from. Anyways they should be able to produce for you a list of what their vendor has, take a look at that list and that will tell you what they can get in. I have never had an lfs that refused to show me their ordering list. Your options would be to find another LFS that you can drive to that can get them in or order online. I would bite the online ordering bullet, just don't order from the place you did last time. Don't let one bad experience ruin it for you. I order online all of the time online and never have issues. I also usually opt for same day air cargo (most of the time for me it costs the same or an extra $20 then overnight shipping).

Microlamprologus stappersi are my favorite of the shell dwellers. Some other neat tangs, Julidochromis dickfeldi, neolamprologus olivaceous, Neolamprologus simillis, telmatochromis sp 'Congo', Julidochromis transcriptus 'Pemba', Neolamprologus christyi, Telmatochromis vittatus, lepidiolamprologus kendalli, Eretmodus cyanosticus... I could go on and on.
