I'm feeding approx 1.5 teaspoons of 1mm new life spectrum pellets with 4 cubes of the san fransisco bay multipack frozen food. And 1 large algae pellet

16 columbian tetras 1.5-2 inches
9 peppered cories 1.5-2 inches
7 red head geophagus 3 inches
4 bolivian rams 2 inches
4 pictus catfish 3 inches
3 angelfish 6.5 inches
2 electric blue acaras 5 inches
1 blue phantom pleco 7 inch

My nitrates have jumped up in my 180 gallon wasnt sure if I was overfeeding

Is that daily? Any days off? Next feeding, drop it in slowly, one piece at a time and see when they slow down or stop. If you have left overs, that’s probably what’s hiding and decaying in your tank.

I feed 6 out of 7 days

It looks as if they are eatting it all within 5 minutes or so.

It's funny you should start this thread. Have you done a cautionary ammonia check? I have a 180 com tank and like you I have a lot of fish in there, mostly small fish. It's a frenzy at feeding time and to be sure fish from all levels are getting fed I tend to put in more food than I should. I'm very aware of the potential problems that can arise from over feeding, notably ammonia spikes, so out of curiosity I did an ammonia test yesterday and it was 1.0ppm!!! I was horrified, though not shocked, I suspected as much. I'm going to have to keep a very watchful eye on this tank now, especially how much I feed.

It dosen't help when everytime you go near the tank the fish go mad as if they haven't been fed for 6 months, you just automatically mistake their behaviour for hunger and cave in. I'm usually very strict with feeding as well but these com fish in my 180g have me wrapped round their little FINgers. Lol.

I should try that lol yes they do always look like they have been starved lol.

What's the full stock on ur 180 and what is ur filtration and water change schedule?

Well you've got 46 fish going off your list. I have low 60's in mine!! But mostly small fish, odessa barbs, rainbows, rosy barbs. I also have filament barbs and beardless barbs which can both get to 6-7", and lastly clown loach ranging from 3-6" which, in time, will get quite large. I also put in a 3" electric blue acara last week which will reach 6".

I have a sump and my water change schedule is 80% every 4 days. My nitrates on water change day are around 20ppm, so i'm not doing too bad, so far. But I seriously need to keep an eye on my parameters now and adjust my schedule accordingly.

And of course number one priority is watch how much I feed!!
