That would gladly pay an extra 10-20 $ per piece of driftwood if it came tannins already removed? This is secondary in excitement only to watching paint dry

IMO I would probably would pay extra if the tannins were 100% removed from the driftwood.

If tannins are an issue, y'all might want to try Java wood.

Sold by many LFS as parrot perches, or for reptiles, but the natural curves to Java wood also look very realistic and natural in an aquarium setting. The wood is very hard, and very dense, and IME it takes approx 2-3 weeks on average before it sinks, but it gives off little in the way of tannins, and after a few weeks of soaking what did leach out can be removed via a large water change. It has a smell to it, much like wet aspen/poplar, but that also goes away after a few weeks. The wood is quite white, but it darkens up substantially after being under water for a few weeks. I presoaked a few outside in tubs, and have also just let large pieces float in the tank until they sank on their own. Our LFS has pieces in all shapes and sizes, from small enough for a 5 gallon, to large enough that they won't fit in a 6ft 125 gallon. Like this one. http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/367700-can-i-use-java-wood/

Good stuff.

A piece of DW is still floating after a year and half

Wow. I wouldn't have the patience to wait a week for a bit of driftwood to stop floating never mind a year! I take it you didnt like the options of drilling it to a base, or even drilling it to release some of the trapped air inside etc?
