Hi Guy's,

I was lucky enough to witness my Red Empress breeding 2 day's ago.

The female seemed to be holding the egg's great, until this morning when I went to feed the tank and watched as she spat the egg's out to have a few NLS pellets.

I quickly grabbed a net and scooped as many as I could out and had to improvise an egg tumbler as I didn't have one.

Can the more experienced egg tumbler's out there tell me from the below video if I am tumbling the egg's OK.

PS Sorry about the noise and the quality of the video, I only have a point and shoot camera.

the eggs are tumbling way too hard.
You just want them to bounce up and down a little.
Check out youtube for reference.

Hi Craig!

Congrats so far!

It looks like the bubbles are collecting underneath the tumbler. Once there is a bigger bubble, it "burps" through the bottom screen and launches your eggs upwards. You're not doing too bad, but it is a bit much.

Is there a way you can put the air stone inside your tumbler? That way, you will get a gentle lift from the water current.

I had a similar situation happen. My homemade tumbler was doing almost exactly what yours is. I quickly put my breeder net inside the tank and placed an air stone inside it. I then placed the eggs in the net. The sides of the net confined the water just enough and the bubbler was able to create some lift. The eggs sort of shimmied on the bottom and would raise up maybe 1/2" every so often. I ended up with no losses on the eggs :)

Keep an eye on them and make sure no fuzzy ones show up. If they do, take them out right away.

Good luck to you!

I agree...the idea is to basically just keep them supplied with oxygen and fresh water not actually make them jump off the bottom.
I have yet to make a tumbler with the air supply on the bottom that I liked. All of the ones I tried had the same issue as yours (air bubbles collect then you get a hard pressure release that shoots the eggs way up when the bubbles break the surface of the cloth on the bottom of the tumbler). I built one based off an old article by Ted Judy and love it. It used parts from a sponge filter and some UGF parts. I'm sure google will be your friend here!

Thanks guy's.
I moved the airstone into the top of the egg tumbler and it didn't seem to be able to move the egg's.
So then I swapped the i inch clear tube for a 1/2 inch and just have the airstone in the very top of the tube and it seem's to be working fine, the egg's are just rolling around the bottom of the tumbler.

When will I be able to move the egg's into the 10 gallon grow-out tank?
All the egg's seem to be orange and I haven't seen any white or fuzzy one's yet.

Thank's,
Craig

I like to leave the fry in the tumbler until right before they are free swimming. They will transfer much better if the yolk sack is almost absorbed. I would guess 1.5-2 weeks from the lay date...maybe more.

Agreed. You don't have to worry about feeding at this stage of course. I kept my bubbler going the entire time. Not sure if it was required, but I felt it would help the fry get used to the "current" they will endure once they are released into a filtered tank.

Good luck!
