All over Reddit I see people with nymphs and larvae in their tank and they’re asking what it is how it got there and if it’s dangerous but then as soon as one person says its fine and to feed it to their fish. These fish are bred generations in captivity all they know for the most part is pellets and the occasional live food. When you have something that came from the wild there’s no telling what it may be capable of. It just don’t make sense to me. People see something in their tank, they don’t know what it is or if it’s dangerous, one person says it’s alright and it makes it perfectly fine? 5 minutes ago you were worried about the safety of your fish and now one person convinced you that it’s the best thing to feed to your fish

Well...I guess it depends mostly upon how much you trust the person giving advice. If you know he/she is reliable and knowledgeable, then trusting him/her seems reasonable.

If you are trusting the word of complete unknowns...or, worse still, people with a proven track record of unreliability...then you deserve whatever you get.

We’re talking about the amazingly informed people of Reddit.

Reddit probably isn’t the best place for anything…
It is annoying when there is a whole lot of advice and the op picks the one experience that actually serves them. Though that could be the only person that actually has experience there (on Reddit I can’t say anyone does though).
On the topic of nymphs, that is what they naturally eat. Just because they’ve been bred for captivity does not mean they are supposed to eat prepared foods, they still know that a nymph, bug, or fish is food. I put a damselfly nymph in my tank, it lasted a few minutes tops - these fish had never seen it before (maybe the puffers, but it was probably the tetras that ate it). Only main concern is potential parasite or toxin transfer, but that’s probably minimal.

Well, there ya go...

Yep, keep asking until they hear what they want to hear.

Key word is probably. It’s unlikely for anything bad to happen but still why risk that. I mean if you can identify it and know what it is know the benefits over risks then go for. Just cause they’ve been bred in captivity for so long I agree doesn’t mean they don’t have no clue what it is but remember, fish will eat just about anything and they don’t know if it’s good for them or not and when put in a confined space like that of an aquarium is it not the owners responsibility to make sure that what the fish is eating is best for it. And odds are the best thing for the fish isn’t going to be larvae or nymph that randomly showed up out of nowhere

I think it’s still going to be fine for them. Most hitchhiker nymphs are common stuff that won’t be a problem…and the fish will find it before you do.

Yes the fish is most likely gonna be just fine but I don’t understand why people are so fast to throw anything in their tank as food just because they were told it was alright. I guess people just hear what they want. Idk why I’m getting so worked up over this but I am. It just doesn’t make the tiniest bit of sense to me

I do agree, I am very careful about what I put in too.
