About 6 weeks ago I was replacing my 55 gallon tank with a larger 125. I removed all the fish and put them in my 15 gal hospital tank in the basement. The next day after I got the new tank installed I retrieved all the fish and put them in their new home. I unplugged the power strip which activated the pump, heater and air stone and went on my way. Yesterday while looking for something in the basement, I glanced over at the tank and noticed one of my albino bristlenose plecos was still in the tank it had almost tripled in size! I cannot see how it survived because the room was dark and the water was 65 degrees. Needless to say he is a survivor and alive and well in his new home.

My only guess is that with no power, there was no filter, so the algae was growing which gave it something to eat. But from what I understand, algae needs light to grow so I am not sure. That is still quite the fish tale.

Glad to hear he survived, but I have to ask, why would you leave the water in the tank for six weeks?

As soon as I put him in the 125 he went directly to the slice of zuchinni. He is doing quite well with no ill effects.

We have been doing a lot of remodeling over the past several months and never got around to empting the tank.

I keep bristlenose in my unheated Gymnogeophagus tanks, that get down into the low 60s, and they do fine. There are bristlenose that live in Uruguay, Argentina and southern Brazil where water can get colder than 60. I believe they do better with seasonal changes in temp.
