Hi all

I'm Jack, new here!

I have an Amazon Puffer, he's about 1.5 inches (inc fin) and would like a little info about him....

1. I know that it's 'said' that they get to be around 4-6 inches.. But all the pics I've googled they all look to be around 1-2 inches MAX.. Nobody has a picture of a fully grown one? I'm really curious to see...

2. Anyone know of a website that sells tiny snails? I can't find them for the life of me and it's really frustrating! I know people suggest local pet stores but I've asked at a couple to no avail... So if anybody knows of any online sources please give me a shout!

And finally, I'm a bit of a newbie to fishkeeping, having said that I do know enough to maintain a healthy aquarium.. But I'm always willing to learn new tips and tricks.

Any info is appreciated guys!

Cheers

Jack

For snails, I started my snail tank..and for a SAP you will need a snail tank...I bought my snails from aquabid.com (all you need is a paypal account) and type in the word "ramshorn" in the search.

http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/search.cgi

To get the best deal..add the cost + the cost of shipping and divide by number of.
snails. For example a total cost of $20 for 50 snails, equals about 40 cents a snail which is about the max I would pay per snail.

You can also try Ebay

Please remember, A SAP is notorious for fast tooth growth, for practicality you will need to breed your own snails.

here is some snail breeding information
http://www.**************.com/forum/library/feeding/basic-snail-breeding/

SAPs also like schools so if you have a big enough tank (About 15 gallons per puffer) You could do a school.

Here is a profile of the South American puffers
http://www.**************.com/forum/ug.php/v/PufferPedia/Freshwater/C_Asellus/

And here is a care article for SAPs
http://www.**************.com/forum/library/puffers-in-focus/sap/

And if you should need it in the future, here is a teeth trimming article
http://www.**************.com/forum/library/hospital/dentistry/

Furthermore, you should seek out or take advice from two members in particular because they have direct experience with SAPs, Pufferpunk and J-P

And do you have any pictures so we can ID you puffer, just in case it was sold to you under the wrong name?

Thanks for that - Excellent information, appreciate it!

Yeah, I know I need to set up a snail tank, so I will action that tonight, I've had him for 2 weeks now and have already noticed his teeth have grown since I've only been feeding him frozen bloodworm, so the snail tank setup asap is a must... Thanks for that site also, I'll take a look.

I've read about the dentistry involved and fully understand the process so no qualms there..!

Thanks for those names too, how do I contact them? Sorry I'm a newbie!!

Cheers

The link did not take me anywhere, can you do the picture as an attachment?

J-P and pufferpunk, should be in here sometime today, most likely later tonight and they are always on that other site in the forums (Not now , because it is early for them LOL)

I just wanted you to know their names, so if they responded to you..you would know that they know what they are talking about!

Do you have anything crunchy to feed him?

If the teeth are growing, you will not have time to set up a snail tank.

Crunchy foods keep teeth worn down (but they cannot bring overgrown teeth back down)

Tank a hammer to some crab legs.....a couple of good taps to break up the shell, and if they like it they will trim their teeth chewing on the shell to get to the meat.

Okay I'll try that then! & I'm struggling with the picture, I tried to attach it but I have to supply a URL for it? I'm 100% sure its an Amazon Puffer though!

Thanks for your help!

You can go through photo bucket.com

Or click on the attachment button (it is a picture of a little paper clip), and then upload the picture from your computer- note you have to be in advanced mode..and not just on quick reply

I think a picture is important for ID, because during your own searches you have said you found information that it was 3 to 6 inches...which is weird...

Green Writing = Do you know what size they get to then? Mouth to fin... And how long on average their growth rates are?
