Has anyone kept this fish? It's AKA Brazilian Puffer, South American Puffer, or the breeder that my girlfriend got hers from called it a Striped Puffer. She has yet to put it in her tank, it's still in quarantine at the lfs. My question is, could I put one of these in my 29 gallon Amazon river community biotope? It contains 1 Angelfish, 3 cardinal tetras, and 2 cory cats. From the articles I've read, this puffer is "the exception to the rule" in that it can usually be kept in a community tank without being a bully. I know cardinals are pretty shy and angels are pretty slow and I don't want there to be any problems.

I'll get a better idea of their personality when my girlfriend adds hers to her tank in the next couple days ( a 75 gallon planted tank with loaches, barbs, catfish, and a peacock gudgeon). I thought I'd ask the puffer forum also.

I don't think puffers belong in a community tank set up. They are very prone to ich/velvet when moved to a new environment. They need a 99% diet of snails or regular dentistry is necessary every 4 months. They like to be in groups of 3 or more.

they can be fin nippers but ive had experiece with nippers and non nippers. your angel fish is a risk however since these little blighters are changeable he could very well be fine (i've had these in with Siamese fighters an they nipped once, got battered for the cheek and then left the fighter alone...maybe they learn)

ya it is said the SAP is one the if not the nicest puffer so you could chance it but a puffer is still a puffer, so dont be surprised if he turns nasty.

He beat up my girlfriend's peacock gudgeon but other than that everyone else is pretty fast moving so I think its gonna be okay. I put the gudgeon in my 29 with cardinals and corys and an angel. I think I will stay away from getting one of these puffers.

I have coworkers who can perform the dentistry.

Expect the gudgeon to eat all the cardinals & anything it can fit into it's large mouth.

Once again pp, you are talking about the wrong fish. Try using google instead of just pulling info out of your ass. The peacock gudgeon is tiny and peaceful. Maybe you're thinking of the purple-spot gudgeon? I know better, so it's okay, and I guess shame on me for not using scientific names but shame on you for giving stupid information to someone who might be reading this thread.
