I received a large bunch of swords, about 12" in height, I put them in a small pot with dirt substrate & some rocks on top to hold the storks & dirt from becoming adrift, my plan was to incorporate a root tab in the pot but my lfs didn't carry any in stock, my question is how long will they last with out them? because I'm not sure when I will be able to pick some up

You will notice changes within a month ime with the first Amazon Sword. They are heavy root feeders. You have a few days but root tabs are definitely needed.

Thx for the reply if figured as much, the Holiday has me all jammed up for moment, my two kids come first, but as soon as I can I will order some root tabs,

If you're using a dirted substrate, then you should be fine for a good long while. Root tabs aren't really necessary unless you're using an inert substrate. Another cheap, but messy option, is to buy a bag of Organic Potting Soil, use that and cap it with some gravel.

That does make sense I have gravel mixed with sand.

I have grown big swords in just sand substrate and high lighting with a bit of liquid fertiliser to get them growing at the start. I don’t think root tabs are necessary but can help but you don’t need them imo if you have enough light and deep substrate.

Thankfully are easy to grow. Plant the roots in a good substrate (sand, dirt, flourite, etc) with lighting and it’ll grow. Take a while but it’ll sustain. Ferts and toot tabs make it grow way faster. Require a bit more iron than other plants. Root tabs should last months.

I have had a long battle getting swords to grow, finally have learned the key is Iron ( for me, anyways). Ever since started dosing Iron( along with Seachem NPK, Flourish and Advance), have seen an explosion in growth in my Amazon sword. I was told in the beginning, when I started growing plants in the aquarium and began water column dosing, that I didn't need to add Iron.
About 6 months ago, someone advised that I started adding Iron- huge difference not only in my swords, but all my plants.

potting soil has kept my sword happy for two years. it has gone from 6' and 5 leaves to outgrowing my tank a few , despite being occasionally chewed up horribly by my BN.. I did try Stanzzzz7 Stanzzzz7 's rabbit dropping, too, so that may help.
