I have an amazon sword plant in my 30 gallon community tank and when I got it, it was very small and now it has grown all the way to the top of the tank. My question is how do I maybe separate the plant into a couple of separate sword plant to put in another tank or aquascape the 30 even more? I don't want to do it without knowing what I am doing first and get advice from folks on here with more experience in live plants. I do have to say getting live plants was the best thing for the tank and the mollies, rainbowfish, cory cats, pleco, and black tetra that I have in there. Can anyone help with my dilemma?

Oh, by the way, I do have a pic of the plants I have in there, the plant for the question is on the right side of the tank, that was the size of it over a year ago......like I was saying, it is to the top of the tank now.

Unfortunately swords propagate by runners and not cuttings, so separating the existing plant will be difficult. You can try to separate it between the leaves (via the roots) but that is dicey at best.

The swords will also split, but they will look like two seperate plants next to one another. If they do not look like seperate plants you cannot split into two.

Unfortunately, you can risk destroying the plant you have if you attempt to split it. The sword should eventually send out runners if it has reached the top of your tank (with adequate lighting).
