I want to grow 2-3 amazon sword plants in my 220g tank. It will be a community fish tank with a huge piece of driftwood. I like to keep sand as the substrate and I don't have access to artificial substrates such as eco-complete. So it has to be sand, gravel or soil over sand. I'm bit reluctant to do soil over sand since I've never done that before.

Will I be able to successfully grow some amazon swords with sand substrate? What are my options here?

I grow swords in both my 240 and my 135. Both have sand substrate and that's it. I usually have lights on around 11-12hrs a day and every so often I dose the tank with a liquid fertilizer.

I had my amazon swords grow very well even though I had sand as substrate. I had used river rocks to keep the amazons down, if you do choose to go this way. Make sure not to "crush" the roots.
