"Amazon" is a pretty big area, could have anything from rocks and sand to full planted to branches leaf litter and brown water as you suggested.....

but seriously, you can turn the water brown(ish) with bog wood

I took the amazon approach, I used sand, amazon sword plants and drift wood. The tannins in the wood did give it an amazon feel to it. Here's a picture

Play sand from home depot, $9 for 100lbs. Just make sure you wash it out for a good amount of Time

I'm not sure this belongs in the DIY Tank section. Anyways, what's the list of fishes you have in mind? Figure that out first. From there you can figure everything else out.
