Hi, I planted a new nano tank this week with amazon swords and some dwarf hair grass. I have been leaving the light on during the day and have fertilizer from another planted tank in it and it has a sponge filter that runs constantly.

But, my problem is that my amazon sword's leaves are becoming see though and are turning a darkish green color. Then my hair grass is turning slightly brown. I have the hair grass buried to were a little of the brown of the roots are showing and trimmed the brown roots off of my amazon and just left the white ones one it. I did today just bury a few white roots. But I don't know what is causing them to start to die.

I did cycle the tank for a week adding what and substrate from another tank and squeezing filter media into the tank some to get some "good" bacteria in there. If anyone thinks they can figure this out please help :(

A few questions:

What fertilizer are you using, how much and how often? Are you providing enough macro nutrients (nitrogen, Phosporus and Potassium)?

Did you just purchase the plants? Some aquatic plants are grown emersed (out of water) and require time to aclimate to full submersion. This is common with dwarf hair grass.

What substrate are you using? Sand provides no source of nutrients and both sword plants and dwarf hair grass do well with substrate fertilization. Using root tabs will help tremedously.

What is your light source? What spectrum of light? 5500-6500K provides optimal light for plant growth.

usually when you have leaf melt its because your water has too much dissolved solids in it aka your KDH or gdh is too high ( i forget which) is too high.. try doing a water change with either drinking water or distilled water(dont quote me on the distilled water)

ok maybe you should just ignore my post, im reading elsewhere that it might be that you dont have enough dissolved solids, like magnesium and calcium.

No I dont have test yet and I will be getting them tomorrow. I have black substrate from an established tank (I can't remeber what its called) I have plants growing in the other tank. For now I use a fertilizer from miracle grow since I am not going to put fish in for a while. I just put a dose of it in an hour ago. I did just purchase the plants. I will check the lighting. Its one thats attached to the back of the tank but im checking the specs now.

hmmm i duno about the miracle grow, but i've also seen people use it with success. it's prolly just your pants getting use to a new habitat. i would recommend you use excel plant ferts, i think miracle grow has some chemicals that only benefit algae in aquatic situations.

Okay, thanks! I will run by Monday and grab some from my lfs and ask what kind they suggest to. Plus I bought my plants from them and I will ask about it. They usually know what they are talking about so we will see!

I also installed a heater in the tank since the water temp is 60 degrees F. That might affect the plants as well. I am also doing water changes daily to make sure it isn't the water causing they to "decay".

not enough flow, and i would dose macros and micros, along with pressured c02, and get a good light...

C02 isn't a must since I have a 20 gallon long planted that does perfectly fine without it. I will pick up some stuff to dose it today. I am doing water changes and the sponge filter disintegrated...what kind should I sue that won't fall apart?
