I've been thinking about getting a few of these for my 55g. I have a t. meeki and a. robertesoni in with swordtails right now.
I have heard ameca splendens is a pretty aggressive livebarer, and are pretty tough fish.
Would they be ok with the cichlids and with the swordtails?

I have not kept them myself but know several who have and the ameca do well with the cichlids.

That is good to know. Are there any other rare live barers that would be good choices? I am looking for something different then swordtails, platies and mollies. I want to keep a CA theme too.

Can't get much rarer than a extinct fish!!! lol (Ameca Splendens)

I currently keep 5 ameca splendins with a pair of cutteri, pair of meeki, a female rainbow cichlid (multispinosa I think is the spelling), 4 juvie panamensis, 3 adult sword tails 2/m 1/f. These guys all live very well in a 110 6' tank. This is one of my favorite tanks its very active and works very well. I would recomend keeping them with any of the smaller (archocentrus, cryptoheros, thorichthys, neets) cichlid. They are a bit on the nippy side though, they really like fins. But I haven't seen anything that any of the other fish can't handle. And everyone has nice fins because they only nip sometimes and have such small mouths. Good luck and I hope you decide to get the splendins they are a real pleasure.

Thanks, and good to know they won't be shredding cichlid fins :) Would they be ok w/ swordtails? Do you think $10 is a lot? I know they aren't found in the wild, and I would be to breeding them.

10 dollars a piece???? That's a little spendy imo. I bought 7 for 12 dollars. But there is a really big following for the hobby I'm area. So I'm not sure what is expensive and isent. Oh and if they are 10 dollars a piece breed the crap out of them (I would set up a 55 gallon breeding project and make some money if they sell for that price). You probably will not have fry survive in a tank with cichlids though, the fry when born are fairly large like almost 1/2 inch. but with even small cichlids these are still just bite size. My splendins are fine with my swordtails so I don't see why you would have any problems keeping them together.

Up $10 a fish. They also had pike livebarers before at $14 a fish, but have heard they are too shy with cichlids and need live foods. I also have a 25g and maybe restocking my 72g.

From my experience, keeping Ameca Splendens with cichlids might work depending on the size and population of the tank, but in long term, probably the Ameca will aim at the cichlids fins.
When they started to persecute the cichlids, I wasn´t able to solve the problem without taking them out of the tank.
I know these aren´t lvebearers, but the Congo Tetra make good companions.

I have a breeding colony of Ameca splendens and I have a tank full of 1 one inch or so juvies that I would be willing to part with. If you are interested and if you live in the USA I could sell you some plus shipping. Just let me know! Either PM me or e-mail me at Falcon034@aol.com or chrissfishes@yahoo.com. I am selling them at a $1.50 a pair. I am out of town at the moment but I will be back on the 14th. I think the Ameca's would go great with the cichlids. They aren't very aggressive at all. When they get older they do get a little chase aggression and fin nippy but it isn't bad and it isn't anything a cichlid couldn't handle. The cichlids would keep them in place.
