CHeck out this stuff. It might be an alternative for plywood tanks. $150 for 5 gallons.

Old news. I mentioned this about 2 years ago. The company won't guarantee that it is fish safe even though it is said that it can be used for potable water (coating water cisterns) per them.
It seems that thread is long gone. I tried to find it to reference. A quick summary, I have used Ames Snow Seal on an aquarium. While it was successful it also had many issues including micro bubbles in the finished product. Application methods may provide different results. After a year the product had broken down a bit. I attempted to use Ames Bluemax for a test build but due to my previous experiences as well as issues with obtaining the product it became clear that it was not a financially beneficial product to use for this purpose. There are other more tried and true methods which cost the same and even sometimes less when figuring out the final cost.
Just an FYI, that original ames tank was built in 2005. Pictures were at one point hosted on fishforums but have long since disappeared.
