Anybody have any good general info on the bowfin? I can't find too much on the internet.

what information are you looking for?

-they get big
-males are much more colorfull then female and stay smaller
-ive heard they dont get along well with other bowfin, mine was fighting with a pike cichlid for a while.
-they will do well in a community as long as the other fish arent bite size.
-will do well in both colder waters or tropical conditions
-mine goes nuts for market shrimp and live feeders he will also eat pellets as well

large growing fish around 30+" from adult ones i've seen, for a tank i wouldn't do anything under a 8'x30-36". their not a regular fish in the aquarium trade being there a cold water native american fish so there wouldn't be info on how to keep them. they can be kept in warmer waters, mid 70's. not always easy to get eating staple prepared foods- earthworms, feeders, market fish, would be good alternative's.

sometimes you really have to look around to find the species for sale, i've seen a few for sale on this website.

i wish I could have one

how big is big? whats the tank size?

And where to get em?

i have never seen them reach 24+ inches in captivity. but i wouldnt not go with anything less then a 96x30 for adults.

they arent on the market often because there is not a big demand for natives but you can find them. a while back someone had one for 30$ on here which is a steel imo. post a wanted ad in the classified section.

there are pics here of a 3' one. Forgot where
