new to wolfish...
Building a large tank and was considering to put hoplias in there with various fish, the fast kind wif teefs. Most of the stock now are 5-12inches various payaras, atfs, channa, etc etc... dont want them to get tore up.
hoplias is a 15 inch log of muscle.
current tank hes in is divided in the middle, other side live some pygos. Hoplias is curious flares his gills but only when they come near. He doesnt approach them unless they are close. but didnt appear to be outwardly aggressive.
so did a test with 5 6inch tilapias to see what he would do. 5ft long by 1.5 x 1.5 tank. (ready on stand by to seperate if he started tearing them apart)
at first he flared when they swam by, then he'd swim right up to them. couple times he rushed, snapped, head butted but never bit them. That was last night. Been a day, none of the fish have a scratch on them. they just swim around and he minds his own business.
ready supply of 20-30 feeders in tank. havent seen him chase any down, just sits in a place, if one swims near enough, he strikes and eats it. bigger feeders (over 1inch) he'll spit out, appears to have trouble swallowing whole. doesn't bite feeders in half like some other fish do.
I've heard these fish are non-tolerant of tank mates and eat with violent vigor. Have there been cases of hoplias gone soft with other hoplias keepers or is this normally how they are? Hope they are just like this, as he'll make a nice addition to tank bottom.
thanks
