so i set up 2 plywood tanks and I used ge type 1 silicone and ever since i filled it up the ammonia is high and I cant seem to get it down. I have tried water changes and seachem prime which removes ammonia. So I think I might have it narrowed down to 2 problems 1 my test kit is messed up or the ge 1 is putting off ammonia. so what does everybody think

How long did you cure the silicone for before you added water to the tank? If the silicone was allowed to cure properly, then it shouldn't have anything left to seep into the water.

You might try testing you kit on a glass of tap water, or else take a sample of your water to an LFS and have them test it to see if the tests match up with your home tests.

More likely chloramines in your water. When you add prime it breaks the bond and releases ammonia. Prime will neutralize it so it won't be a dangerous amount for your fish but your test kit will read a false pos high reading

Howdy,

As asked above: What's your tap water reading?

Also: Is the tank stocked and filtered?

All "Kitchen & Bath" versions of silicone have an ammonia based antifungal agent in them...

Thus we always suggest using the "Window and Door" versions...
