I just did my usual twice a week 50% water change on my ray tank and for some reason I got the urge to test the water after the change. Expecting my usual perfect perams I was shocked to see that I was reading .25-.50 ppm of ammonia!!!

I freaked and retested 3 more times with the same results. Stumped on the cause I decided to test my tap and sure enough I was getting a solid reading of .50ppm! :swear:

During the change I added a capeful of prime as my usual dechlore and since I have found the high readings of ammonia I added 1 1/2 more capefuls. I am waiting a few more minutes to retest to see if the prime had any effect.

Since the problem is with my tap and its passed 9pm local time what should I do?!

Help ray gods!

for futer refernce go to www.drsfostersmith.com and but the tap water filter for 25 dollors or get a ro

I don't think that will help with an Ammonia problem out of the tap..

You're water company is suppose to notify you when they add Chloramine to the water like that.. Good thing you use Prime, because most people with that same problem wouldn't be able to keep fish without such a great product.

Well I called work (petsmart but dont laugh there are some really knowledgable people at my store at least) and my manager said that for the past month or so the water has been coming out of the tap like that.

Since it is a problem with my tap I think my filters (two emp 330s with the normal 4 cartridge on each unit plus small bath loufa thingies stuffed in any place they will fit for maximum bio filtration) will be able to handle it over night, but should I worry about my Retic and Motoro in the mean time?

The prime has lowered my readings to less then .25ppm, but I still am showing some signs of ammonia. I am using a liquid test kit BTW.

I was recently informed about prime on this site, it is a great product, nothing compares.

What is your Temp and pH? Ammonia is less toxic the cooler your water, and lower your pH is. I am not recomending you try to alter it at this point, but if they are both on the lower end of the spectrum, the ammonia might not be as lethal.

you'll always get a very small reading of ammonia when dealing chloramine its the result of the binding agents breaking down the ammonia is released unless you use a lot of prime it has a regent to mop up the ammonia but with your rays i would do this graduialy so your rays get used to the chemicls in prime untill then cut back on the water change i do it twice a week when i can at about 20% i keep sensitive plecos and have been informed they need to be conditioned to prime for large w/changes but so far its been a great product no deaths but like you on a large w/change get a mild reading of ammonia

i agree with miles should have added it also higher temps= toxic
lower less toxic

My Ph is 7.2 and I keep my water on the warm end; about 83 degrees. I just got back home and now I am am not showing a reading, but I am worried because I ended dosing my tank about 4x the standard dose. It did say on the bottle you could go as high as five times however.

My retic seems a little stressed but I do not know if its just me over reacting or if he really is. My motoro on the other hand seems as happy as she can be.

Will update in the AM.
