what does it mean if you tank has ammonia , nitrate but no nitrite tank is heavily loaded , just suffered a ph crash does the nitrate mean tank has bacteria to convert ammonia to nitrate? several huge water changes were done the past few days so i was ecpecting 0 nitrates only ammonia

based on the readings, the process has been somehow effected. usually, ammonia is most effected by a PH crash, thus giving readings of ammonium and slowing or halting the nitrification process.

If it is an API test kit you need to really shake the second bottle of the test kit to get proper reading... I learned the hard way!lol

What you described sounded like what is exactly happening in my tank now. My PH dropped to 5.5 this morning (has been hovering around 5.75 the last 2 weeks) and added baking soda and now is at 6.0. I think the nitrification porcess is very slow....what else can I do?

Is your test kit giving you a very high NH3 reading ?
What type/brand are you using to measure the ammonia ?

I am using the API NH3/NH4 and NO3 test kits. Ammonia card reading is 1.0 while Nitrate card reading is 80.

I did that though....thanks.

Thanks to all responses.

Well...depends on how your setup is and your source of tap.
In general, I'd put about 1/2 lb of washed Crushed Coral within a mesh bag inside the canister. Wait for about 3 days to restest, add more to increase PH. Leave it alone if PH is at the desired level.
