Hey everyone. I've been wondering about something but never had a chance to ask. Anyways, what's the purpose of chemical ammonia removers and the ammonia remover that is mixed with charcoal? I feel that using these ammonia removers doesn't fix any problems with high ammonia but is just a temporary fix. A well-kept tank should be cycled and have beneficial bacteria to help break down waste and take care of the ammonia unless the tank gets over-crowded and starts to cycle again. So, what are they used for?

Imho, as you say, for a quick and urgent fix in an ammonia spike situation.

I have never had one so i never used any of those products

You need zeolite rocks. I have 30lb sacks that I use when importing and quarantining koi. They can be recharged by soaking them in salt water. So it is important that you do not have salt in the tank otherwise it will release it.
Your charcoal mix is probably saturated. Try soaking it in salt water to recharge. Again make sure there is no salt in your tank.

Maybe I was a little confusing but I don't use charcoal (only for blue water from Ick) or the charcoal ammonia mix or any ammonia removing chemicals. I just wanted to know why people use them. Thanks, Ed.

It's used to remove chemicals like medicine.

I use and know that charcoal can clean your water of medicine but I didn't know that ammonia also removes medicine.

I think the stuff you're talking about is carbon and zeolite mix. It's used to as a chemical remover for removing medication, ammonia, chlorine and chlormine.

I've posted without checking what I wrote first. I meant to say that I didn't know why the ammonia remover that is combined with charcoal in the milk cartons would be needed with the carbon to remove medicine from the tank. That is new to me. I've been using just carbon to remove medicine for over 30 years now and didn't know that the carbon, ammonia remover mix also help remove medication.
