:irked:I have a 60gal marine tank with about 50lbs of live rock and 40lbs of live sand. The tanks as been established for about 2 months but i just cant seem to get the ammonia lvls under control. I also have a nasty brown algae problem going. I've cut back on food to make sure im not overfeeding. I've drastically cut down on the legnth of ti:irked:me the light is on but 4-5 hours and its all over the tank. I have a protien skimmer and i emptied it two days ago when i did a 50% water change the next day it was half full of this yelloqish water which was unusual since the contents are usually a darkgreen almost black muck. The morning after the water change all of my snails and one of my fire shrimp died. My othwr shrimp didnt look so hot but all the fish and my sallie crab were fine. Since then my sallie has been hanging upside down on a live rock enjoying a $32 shrimp dinner. I've checked my ph and its stable at 8.2. I am using tap water andin the nrxt month or so im considering an ro unit. I dont want to spend thw money if it wont work. Im ready to just sell everything and convert to cichlids if i cant fix the problem.

has the ammonia always been high or is it a reent development?

not to call you stupid... but did anything go "missing" that you haven't noticed?

it's kind of unlikely, but your tap water could have had copper in it, and your ammonia test is on the fritz... leading you to think there's an ammonia problem that killed the stock

have you had the water tested elsewhere?

No actually, maybe I'll get it tested else where. But the last thing that went missing was about 3 and 1/2 weeks ago (itty bitty cromie, I think it met the fate of my evil hermit crab, which I came home today and found dead in the corner too, everything else is fine and has quite the appitite). I might try a copper test and see if that gives off a reading. I think that the solution is to go with RO water, but I'm not certain it will fix it and I'd hate to spend the money for no reason.

Sorry LoL forgot my brother was logged in still, the hobby runs in the family :P but this is actually stargizma...for now...
