Ammonia spike in my 500, why?

I had a huge ammonia spike in my 500 gallon. I tested the water and it has a level of 2.0 :( why?!?!? I am doing a huge 75% w/c on it now.

I was thinking... I was going to treat a fish in my 500 so i added a bottle of melfix( treats 475 gallons per bottle) so I dumped the whole bottle in. I have heard adding medication can cause ammonia spikes. i keep my water clean and for 500 gallons it has 3 oscars, 3 rays and a arowana :nilly: I did a gravel vac and barley got and poo :nilly:

think the medication did it?
 
Some meds will kill the benefical bacteria in your tank,but Melafix is not one of them. It's not really medication.It's more like giving your fish a bath in tea leaves. I'm not sure what caused your ammonia spike. Good luck.

What was the reason for adding the Melafix?
 
well not melifix but prifix. Almost the same thing I think.

Prifix, or pimafix?
 
Melafix and Pimafix won't do anything to your water Dustin...you just need to do more waterchanges.

Yes the tank was cycled. And even if I had no idea what the nitrogen cycle was, It would be cycled buy now. So I have no idea why I had a spike.

I was just making sure that it was pimafix, and not some other knockoff trying to copy pimafix.

Anyways, you shouldn't have used pimafix anyways, unless you have a fungal or bacterial infection. If you just want to help your fish heal quicker all you need is melafix. And no, they should not harm your bb.

The only reason I bought pimafix was because they had not melifix.
