what are some things that can cause ammonia to spike?
i notice it spikes to about .25ppm after i change to new filters

When you change to the new filters you are removing the bb in the cycled filter pads. It then goes through a little mini cycle so that bb can be placed into the new filters. I suggest when you change your filter pads you add the new filter pads to the tank about a week before you remove the old ones. This will allow the new ones to become seeded thus preventing the spike.
