ok so i'm looking into getting another ray. all my params are normal but one. my ph: 6.8 nitrite:0ppm nitrate: 5-10ppm ammonia: .25 ppm.
as i'm thinking of getting a ray i wanted to even out my ammonia, so i go to my lfs and buy ammo-lock and a sheet of ammonia reducing friber by deep blue. i put the fiber in my canister and get it running. then i put in the ammo-lock (liquid) and as i am putting it in i see that it says it changes ammonia to a non-toxic form but if i test it will still come up positive. so my question is how am i supposed to test my ammonia levels if it goona test +. i just don't know what to do here. all advice is welcome.

Increase the amount and frequency of your water changes and/or add more filtration to the tank and your ammonia level will decrease.

I wouldn't be relying on ammonia reducing products if you are going to put rays in the tank. You will quickly become unstuck. Best thing to do is increase your bilogical filtration, and do more frequent waterchanges.

Completely agree with the other posts. Ammonia reducing products are only a bandaid fix, not correcting the problem at hand. More biological filtration and / or increase water changes.

The ammo lock will make the ammonia harmless until your BB can remove it. You need to figure out why you have ammonia to begin with.

It is most likely lack of bio filtration but could also be trapped food etc...

Keep in mind that a ray would magnify this problem 10x since they create such a large bio load

Not saying you don't have ammonia, but reading certain kind of tests kits can be misleading. I have an API ammonia test kit and no matter what water I test I always get a color that best matches .25. This is testing my tank, my well water, DI water from work and distilled water. I've come to the conclusion that I'll never see the color show anything less. Any change in color beyond that and I start to worry. Out of curiosity, you may want to do baseline tests with your kit just to check.

what he said ^^^

but the ammonia is not harmless just slightly less toxic

thanks all, i've been doing 25% every two days. i think i may test my home water and see what those ammonia levels are.
