I started up my new tank (150 Gallons) a couple weeks ago and the amonia is a still a little high. Any tips on how best to reduce it?

A couple of questions first:

Have you cycled it?

Are there fish in there? If so what kind, size, how many?

What are the other water parameters? (nitrite, nitrate)

What do you have for filtration?

Burt :)

We'll need a bit more information to be helpful......type of filtration...water test results (Peramitors) Number and type of fish in the tank.

In general your looking at between 6 and 8 weeks to fully stabolize a new tank although it can be safe for a limited number of fish in a shorter amount of time. Seeding the filters bio-media with established material and/or using a dose or two of biospira can also reduce your amonia levels.

What do you call a little high by the way? you shouldnt have any real measurable amonia at all in an established tank however the nitrite and nitrate readings are more importiant at this stage to give you an idea of where you are in the cycling process.

AMMONIA.....nitrate.....nitrate = stage one

ammonia......NITRITE....nitrate = stage two

ammonia ....nitrite......NITRATE = stage three

(Capital letters indicate a high reading)

I used bio spira to help cycle. This is the first time I used this stuff. The LFS guys swear by it. Any thoughts? I have a wet/dry filter and some smaller fish in there for now (guppies, mollies, tetras, 2 Gouramis and a loach). The ammonia was between 1 and 2 when I checked a couple days ago. The nitrites and nitrates params looked good, but I need to double check on exactly where they were at. Thanks for your help.
