Hi Folks,

I have had my 240 litre (english litre) tank up and running now for a few weeks (5 to be precise) and I have very gradually increased the number of fish. Now I have a slight ammonia reading using one kit and no ammonia on another grrr... Anyhow going with the one that suggests ammonia is present would it be acceptable to feed my fish once a day? At the moment it is twice and with ammonia showing once may surely help. I dont wanna loose me fish.

Cheers,

Kit

How much ammonia is it showing? I would recommend doing at least small water changes as long as ammonia is present.

Hi Andy,

Well its one of those AVI kits (I think it;s AVI) and the spectrum goes from yellow (being no Ammonia present) right the wy down through ligth green, pea green and deep green being the most ammonia. At the moment I seem to be hovering between the yellow (meaning no ammonia) and the first shade of green (meaning 0.25 presetnt). Terrible problem really reading this kit. As mentioned I have reduced the food (witout starving the poor sods) and done a small water change. A little tiny bit os ammonia should cure itself if I dont overfeed surely.

Cheers,

Kit

Sounds like an API kit to me, but being in the UK, it could be something different.

0.25 ammonia isn't too bad. Keep the feeding cut to 1 feeding per day (maybe even every other day) until the ammonia clears up. I would also keep up small WCs

Well folks all the advice has started to pay off. Like you said Andy I have drastically re thought the food intake. In fact I went to my local fish place and the guy pushed a tin of flake over the counter and asked me how much I usually feed the fish in a session. He stood back..."What you trying to do, feed the f564783 world," was the curt reply. He showed me exactly how much was required and as you mentioned clockwork he also sold me a purijen pad and O Boy the water is looking great. Thanks for all the help folks, I will keep you posted.
